"The Word of our God stands forever." (Isaiah 40:18)
OLM Faith Sharing groups have been a valuable social and spiritual experience in our parish for over 10 years! The purpose is to share individual perspectives on development, practice, and belief with other members in groups of 8-12 people. Using material from "Why Catholic?", Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Bible, and other sources as a discussion guide, and led by a trained facilitator, individuals experience the value of sharing in a confidential dialogue. As such, it is different from and complementary to Bible Study, daily Mass, adult education or RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) activities. The groups provide a wonderful opportunity to take time out of our busy lives and focus on living God's Word.
One of the questions at OLM addresses is Why Catholic?, utilizing material from the diocesan program Renew, an evangelical faith-based program. Renew's basic purpose is to give its participants a new enthusiasm about being Catholic while helping individuals grown in their faith. It is an opportunity for individuals to learn and understand about the new catechism while reclaiming their Catholic faith and making it more meaningful in their everyday lives. This is a perfect opportunity for any Catholic who would like to explore their faith more deeply or for those who have been away from the church for a while.
The individuals in faith sharing groups experience bonds of unity with:
Prayer and discussion are accomplished in 90 minute, structured meetings under the guidance of The Holy Spirit and facilitated by a trained fellow parishioner and use of powerful materials. It is an opportunity for growth, acceptance, and sharing.
Anyone who has been involved in faith sharing groups since the 1960s will testify that they have benefitted from hearing others perspectives in learning more about their faith. They have found it an opportunity to extend the Sunday mass into a dialogue during the week to know and express beliefs and experiences. The outcome is not just being born a Catholic with an obligation for Sunday mass, but truly knowing the foundation of faith. This comprehensive perspective of Catholic Evangelization program will be a powerful continuation of the established OLM small group endeavor because it invites people to community worship and service in a small group setting.
Each year we offer days of reflection for men and for women. Other faith experiences include a Parish Reflection Series (Parish Mission), Scripture study, and prayer groups that meet periodically. Contact the office for more specific information at (973) 838-6838.
